In late summer 1775, delegates from around North Carolina assembled in Hillsborough in defiance of British orders. Their mission was to continue the transition from royal colony to independent state by adopting practical measures that would help them reach their goal of greater autonomy.
To commemorate this momentous occasion, we will
bring the Congress back to Hillsborough through a series of engaging programs, including a dramatization of the Congress, academic speakers, and a colonial market.
Acadmic Speakers - A series of academic talks will be held at the Orange County Public Library throughout the day. These talks will explore aspects of the congress, its impact, and its legacy.
Colonial Market - Throughout the lawn surrounding the Historic Orange County Courthouse, vendors, community groups, museums and historic sites, and costumes reenactors will be set up to create a Colonial market.
Dramatization - Be transported 250 years in the past and get a glimpse at what the congress might have been like with our dramatization of the Third Provincial Congress. Enjoy an original film that describes the catalysts for the Third Provincial Congress, what the town of Hillsborough was like at the time assembly convened, the measures taken at the meeting, and the actions that occurred as a result of the gathering. After this dynamic presentation, costumed interpreters representing twelve different delegates will speak, explaining who they were and why they became involved in the independence movement. These interpreters will also read resolutions and/or recite quotes from speeches that were delivered at the Congress.
