The self-taught North Carolina artists featured in “Left-Handed Liberty” sometimes achieved recognition as innovative creative minds, but often started out exploring their art in deeply personal ways. They made art in their homes, their workshops, or while in prison; some were plagued by physical and emotional difficulties, and hard times. A few sold their art on the side to admirers and tourists, and some even used their own homes as their canvases or raw materials.
