Explore the history of RV'ing at the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Indiana

By Meg Brunson

After 14 months RV’ing, we were really excited to explore the RV/MH Hall of Fame and learn about the history of RVs! I have to be honest – I definitely thought it was the “RV & Motor Home” Hall of Fame – but the “MH” does NOT stand for Motor Home. It stands for "Manufactured Homes" - so we got a total surprise there when we arrived!

This years’ Hall of Fame Class is on display at the RV/MH Hall of Fame. Every year the Hall opens up a call for nominations of people who have been instrumental in the development of RVs and MHs, and it was interesting to learn about the many people who contributed towards shaping the RV industry as we know it.

We learned about all the steps that go into building a RV, and loved checking out the vintage RVs and talking about what similarities and differences we could pick out between the vintage models and our current model. We met with the president of the Hall of Fame and he mentioned that some of these vintage models arrived with their original condition, and others they restore back to their original vintage state. There were so many RVs and the kids wanted to walk through each and every one of them!

The exhibitor hall was neat - kind of like attending a RV Show, but without any vendors - instead, you could just browse through different displays and the materials left by the companies. I actually really liked this because I could explore different RV vendors without feeling any pressure to sign up for (or buy) anything.

Tips for a terrific visit:

  • Pack a lunch – there are no snack or meal options at the RV/MH Hall of Fame and Museum. When we arrived there weren’t picnic tables either, so bring a blanket (there are a lot of grassy areas to picnic) or plan on snacking in the car (like we did!).
  • Plan to shop – Especially if you’re an RV’er or RV-lover… the gift shop has a lot of really unique RV merchandise, apparel, décor, toys, and more.

If you love (or are curious about) RV’ing this is a great place to visit. Learn more about the RV/MH Hall of Fame and Museum, and start planning your visit at https://www.rvmhhalloffame.org/.
