Family Program: Soapstone Carving - Cape Fear Botanical Garden

Family Programs: Our family programs are designed for individuals of all ages to immerse themselves in the wonders of nature. Our weekend sessions feature engaging activities such as making animal tracks, exploring the Garden, and building with natural materials, providing a joyful and educational experience for everyone.
Carve your soapstone animal for a fun artistic project enjoyed by the whole family. The soft easily filed stone has beautiful natural colors and creates a lasting keepsake. Explore themes of cultural symbolism, sculpture, wildlife, and, natural minerals. Each participant receives a hand-cut soapstone beginner shape, a kid-safe carving file, two grades of sandpaper, polishing wax for a shiny finish, and a buffing cloth.
What to Know: Register by April 11th and choose from one of four animals: Eagle, Bear, Turtle, or Wolf. After April 11th, we will have extra bears available for registrants.
Target Audience: Recommended for ages 8+ with an adult. Younger children are welcome to accompany, but soapstone kits are designed for ages 8+.
Cost: $50 per family, $45 members. Additional soapstone projects may be purchased for $35.
Cost Includes:
- Soapstone kit of your choice which includes hand-cut soapstone shape, full-color directions, kid-safe carving file, two grades of sandpaper, polishing wax, buffing cloth, and display stand
- Experienced instructor
- Garden admission for up to 4 people
- 2 hours of workshop time which is enough to complete a finished soapstone sculpture
