Summer Camp at Sunrise Community Farm Center - Chapel Hill

*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 08/23/2024
Sunrise Community Farm Center has been a dependable summer camp choice for the Triangle for nearly 40 years. Our focus is on a learning experience on a working farm in a natural environment, where campers get to have life experience through our mentors, animals, garden and nature around them.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

Our youngest camp program is our Rainbows, designed for campers rising kindergarten to rising 3rd grade. Campers are in groups of 8-12 campers with 2 Mentors. Rainbows ride horses, go swimming, take hikes, help in the garden, make crafts, and care for chickens and bunnies.

Trailblazers is our camp for campers rising 3rd grade and up, and are in groups of 6-8 with 1 Mentor. Every morning these campers will attend a core class: Horses, Future Farmers, Hike & Wilderness Skills, Farm to Table, and Creative Expressions. After swim time and lunch, Trailblazers will be given their choice of various elective classes, including horseback riding, botany walks, woodshop, archery, care of small animals, and more. Elective options change daily!

Horse Immersion (ages 8+) is a great opportunity for horse loversmore experienced horse lovers. In addition to honing their riding skills, Horse Immersion campers learn how to care for horses and the meaning of Partnership with Animals. During the heat of the day, they take a break from riding to do fun, horse-related activities. They have lunch and swim with the Trailblazers, and get plenty of opportunity each week to explore other areas of the farm. Horse Immersion is limited to 8 campers each week.

Our Junior Mentor Program is for campers ages 12-16. Teens who demonstrate leadership skills and find meaning in working on the farm and with younger kids are welcome to apply to be a Junior Mentor (JM). After a period of training, JMs are given the shared responsibilities of assisting Mentors lead rainbows and/or trailblazers, and helping with general farm tasks (such as feeding the bunnies, sweeping the house, etc.).
