Visiting the Portland Head Light at Cape Elizabeth, Maine

By Meg Brunson

When I think about Maine, I think about rocky coasts and light houses... so I knew that I wanted to plan a trip to a lighthouse. During my research, as soon as I saw Portland Head Light - I knew that was the lighthouse that I wanted to see!

There is a small museum on-site, and admission costs were extremely reasonable. Inside, we enjoyed learning about the different classes of lighthouses, and the history of Maine lighthouses! Outside, the kids loved peeking through the binoculars and watching the ocean waves crash into the rocky coast.

There were walking paths, and some trails that lead to the rocks if you're more adventurous than we were. There is also a large grassy area where the kids enjoyed running and playing, while my husband and I sat closer to the water, enjoying the peacefulness of the ocean while the kids played behind us.

I am sure there are plenty of amazing lighthouses throughout Maine, but Portland Head Light was a nice and easy drive from Portland and if you're going to be in the area I highly recommend a visit!  Learn more at https://portlandheadlight.com/.
